BROTHERLY LOVE
“Where the Sam hell is she? Damn it, she’s 30 minutes late. AGAIN!” Marcus Taylor paced back and forth in his office now extremely agitated at his sister’s lack of responsibility. He had even bought her a cell phone so she could at least phone him if she got into any kind of trouble. Again he looked at the clock and then the door. “Damn it… I have a business to run here, and she’s not helping matters.”
Marcus owned and directed Green Hill Stables, a small riding school of about 25 horses in a barn that he and Shannon inherited from their parents. Shannon was his top riding instructor and his little sister . She was also a very prominent rider and was so good with the kids. Nevertheless he had a business to run. He couldn’t allow family ties to interfere with it, and the students were becoming impatient. He waited a while longer and finally decided to pick up the phone and see if she was at least on her way. He dialed his sister’s number but again all he got was her voice mail.
“Damn, Marcus is going to be furious with me!” she said to herself. Looking at the time, she pulled into the little stable seeing the look on her older brother’s face, which made a shiver run down her back into her boots.
“Hi Marcus, sorry I’m late.” She parked her bike on the side of the barn and proceeded over to the riding ring where she was supposed to be the one teaching not her brother.
Marcus had no choice but to teach the class himself. Again Shannon had let him down, and no words could express the disappointment and anger he was feeling right now.
“Shannon go to my office and wait for me there. We need to have a little ‘chat’ ” He gave Shannon the ever familiar look that she remembered so well, the look she got so many times when she was growing up that told her not to argue with her brother when they were about to have a heart to heart ‘chat’. Marcus being 12 years older then his 22-year-old sister was forced to grow up fast when their parents were killed in a car crash 10 years ago. Because of the age difference and the fact that Marcus had already been on his own for 3 years, he had decided to raise Shannon himself to give his sis a stable life, but their parents death had seemed to affect Shannon more deeply. On top of everything else, she was a handful and a half.
“I’m sorry Marcus. I got held up. Please not another chat.”
To this point, Marcus’s ‘chats’ were merely an hour and a half of endless scolding and boring lectures. She had better things to do than be subjected to them, but she needed to keep her brother happy to keep her present position, a job she desperately needed to pay her way through university. She needed the money for her tuition fees as one day she hoped to graduate and become a certified Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine, specializing with horses. So she just decided to put up with the ‘chats.’ Though deep down she knew her brother only wanted what was best for her, but his lectures were something else.
“Don’t start with me young lady. I’m not in the mood for your excuses, whatever they are.” He again pointed in the direction of his office and then turned around and went back to teaching the class that Shannon herself was supposed to be teaching. To make matters worse it was also a hot and humid day, and all Marcus wanted to do was end the class and head home for the day and just relax by the pool. Instead he was now forced with having to deal with yet one more uneasy task of disciplining his little sister and her silly antics, which had put him in an even more off mood than he was already.
