This was a pleasant story, told from the bottom's point of view as is usual, with the added pleasure of plenty of annual ritual.

Lisette (lovely name) knows what to expect and yet it is not exactly the same every year; this uncertainty adds to her enjoyment, and to ours. It's not overly severe in tone or description and yet we are left in no doubt about the severity of the caning which has to last poor Lisette a whole year.

It includes the fine phrase 'hands which turned pages for a living'. I enjoyed that one.
